What is Estradiol and when should I test it?Updated 8 months ago

Estradiol (E2) is the most potent form of estrogen in the body and is a key reproductive hormone for both men and women, both of which shift with age. during reproductive years. In women, E2 promotes the development of breast, uterine, and vaginal tissue and works in concert with other reproductive hormones (luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, and progesterone) to regulate the menstrual cycle. E2 levels naturally decline as the ovaries stop producing the female sex hormones during menopause. (see the graphic below). In men, estradiol is a hormone essential for regulating libido, erectile function, bone mineral density, and sperm production. Research has also established a connection between optimal estradiol levels in men with better mood and body composition.
